A Charlotte-Mecklenburg school bus was involved in an accident on May 13, 2009 when a vehicle hit the bus from behind as it was making a right hand turn. The bus was carrying 12 students from University Meadows Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Both the drivers of the bus and vehicle were not injured but five of the students were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries.

Incredibly another school bus accident had happened earlier the same day in the same city. There were 25 children on the bus from Highland Mill Montessori Elementary School. Three of those children were transported to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries. Thankfully in both incidents the children only suffered minor injuries.

According to Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Science and Engineering a school bus is the safest way for children to get to and from school. However, it is impossible to ignore the numerous news reports covering school bus accidents. Seat belts are now required on new school buses in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Seat belts can be the preventative measure which could save a child’s life. Injuries sustained in a bus accident can include a number of minor injuries but on a more tragic scale can include broken or fractured bones, whiplash, traumatic brain injury, head, neck or spine injuries, paralysis among many others. In the worst case scenario it may even result in death.
