During the usual early morning route a Knotts Island, North Carolina (NC) school bus driver veered off the shoulder of the road leaving its front end perilously into the marsh. The bus accident occurred on March 18th about 8am in the morning. Knotts Island, North Carolina (NC) is a small, tight-knit community located in Currituck County, North Carolina (NC). Most travelers pass through Currituck County on their way to the vacation destination of the Outer Banks of North Carolina (NC), which includes the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and Manteo, North Carolina (NC).

Experiencing a few tense moments the four elementary students on the bus and the driver where probably bracing for what could have been a much more serious accident that could have had a devastating impact on the tiny community. Largely on part of the driver’s quick reflexes and instincts a small disaster was averted. The four elementary school children and their driver crawled out the back of their school bus that morning after it got stuck in some of the mud off the narrow Marsh Causeway.

Evidently, there were no injuries in the school bus accident. The driver of the bus had just begun her route shortly before 8am and had picked up the children when the front tire went off the pavement and hit a rut along the very narrow Marsh Causeway, said Melissa Jensen, spokeswoman for Currituck County Schools.

When the driver attempted to get the school bus back on the pavement, it veered off the road causing the bus to go into the marsh where it got stuck in the mud. The students were safely taken to Knotts Island Elementary using other vehicles, Jensen said. The Currituck County School’s mechanic will repair the bus back to proper working condition.
