A bicyclist that had collided with a traveling East Carolina University bus on Thursday March 26th has died. The accident happened around 1:00pm near the intersection of 10th Street and Lawrence Street in the town of Greenville, North Carolina (NC). Greenville police say 54-year old Joseph Smallwood died after the accident from multiple injuries at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Smallwood was a resident of Greenville.

Preliminary investigation by Greenville’s Police Traffic Safety Unit of the deadly accident indicates an ECU bus was making a right turn from Lawrence Street to travel west on 10th Street when it collided with a bicycle.

The direction of the bicycle at the time of the deadly accident is yet to be determined from ongoing investigation. The driver of the ECU bus, 26 year old Thomas Hartley of Grimesland, North Carolina (NC) and his three passengers were apparently unharmed.

Although the deadly bus accident is still under investigation, initial reports from police say the bus ran over the bicyclist. An unidentified witness of the accident has mentioned that both the bike and the bus were on Lawrence Street, which is in close proximity to the East Carolina University’s main library. The witness said the bicyclist started to pull out while the bus was making a right turn. It should be noted that this was the 2nd time in as little as a week that an ECU bus has been involved in an accident. Earlier in the week the bucket from a picker truck struck a university bus, which only broke a few windows and harmed no passengers.
