A 94-year-old passenger died after the car she was riding in rear-ended a car on NC Highway 94 across Lake Mattamuskeet in Hyde County, North Carolina (NC). According to Highway Patrol Trooper Darrell Pugh, Emily Gibbs, a resident of Goldsboro was sitting in the back seat and was wearing her seatbelt.

As reported by WITN-TV, Gibbs was pronounced dead at the scene but her cause of death is unclear at this time. She was reported to have a broken leg, but other injuries were unseen.

The two other passengers in the car with Gibbs were taken to the hospital with no serious injuries. In such a car accident, the injured passengers may have rights to pursue an injury claim or suit against the at fault party, whether that person is the driver of their “host” car, and possibly against another car driver, if the other driver also violates a “rule of the road” relating to car operation. There was no mention as to why the Toyota was stopped on Highway 94.
