The W.C. Witherspoon Memorial Library bookmobile was involved in an accident on May 4, 2009. A 1994 Ford pickup driven by 17 year-old Kyle Ray Lane of Elizabeth City, North Carolina lost control of his truck on a 90 degree turn on highway 34 in Weeksville, NC. Lane collided with the bookmobile causing injury to Monek Adams, the bookmobile operator who was transported by ambulance to the Albemarle Hospital. Adams was later released from the hospital and has been recuperating at home. Lane was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
County Manager Randy Keaton reported that he has received estimates as high as $179,000 to replace the bookmobile. Pasquotank-Camden Library Director Jackie King stated that the bookmobile is a total loss. King stated that the bookmobile was making 96 stops per month including visits to day care centers, nursing homes, schools and home bound library patrons. In addition to the stops at these locations, Adams also read to residents at the nursing homes.
