An 18 year old freshman at North Carolina Central University died on the evening of April 9 in a head on car accident in Durham, North Carolina that allegedly was caused by a drunk driver.

The Durham police stated that a car going east on East Geer Street in Durham crossed the center line and slammed into another car. The deceased was a passenger in the second vehicle.

The university stated that the young woman was a pre-nursing student from Winterville, North Carolina.

Both drivers and two other passengers were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the first vehicle has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane control, and driving while impaired.

Our View

Drunk or drugged driving is the most common criminal offense in the US. Many people who have clean records otherwise are every day arrested for drunk driving and in some cases, their poor choice has led to serious injury or death for innocent people.

Even in a case where there are no injuries, a DUI on your record can be disastrous, including penalties such as jail time, losing your license, thousands in fees and fines, high insurance costs, community service, and more.

If your DUI led to serious personal injury or death, you will often not just face the criminal penalties, either. You also can be sued for personal injuries or for wrongful death for your drunk driving accident.

A personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit can be for hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars, and your auto insurance usually only will cover part of it. The rest could be your responsibility.

Our Virginia and North Carolina drunk driving attorneys have represented many people whose lives were upended by drunk drivers. When a client has serious personal injuries, our personal injury attorneys work hard to get them the largest possible settlement. Most people hurt by drunk drivers have large medical bills, pain and suffering, and lost work time. The settlement helps them to get back on their feet financially.

In a case where the drunk driver killed someone, our wrongful death attorneys work tirelessly to win the maximum possible award. Many of those who die in these tragic drunk driving crashes had family that depended upon them for income. A wrongful death settlement can help the family to survive financially. Many wrongful death lawsuit settlements are well over one million dollars.

We hope that this drunk driving accident in North Carolina reminds people to be sober when behind the wheel.
