A store clerk with Rack Room Shoes in Greenville, North Carolina went bey7ond the call of duty when he followed a shoplifter out of his store. The clerk, 31-year-old Ralph Petway, was struck by the suspected shoplifter’s minivan as the woman was making her getaway.

According to an eyewitness to the incident, a woman had left the Rack Room Shoe store about 11:45 a.m. with the clerk, Petway, chasing after her. The woman got into her vehicle, and by that time mall security had driven up and attempted to block her in.

Apparently, the woman who had absconded with the shoes would jump the curb barrier with her minivan which then struck the Rack Room store clerk. The woman backed up, and accelerated away. The eyewitness was able to give police her license plate number.

The brave store clerk was left injured on the pavement outside of his employer’s store. Petway had fallen to the pavement with injuries yet unknown. There has yet to be any word from his employer, Rack Room Shoes as to his valor and bravery. The victim was sent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Although this sort of bravery and workplace conscientiousness is valued in our civilized society, rushing after a felonious lawbreaker may not be in your best interest when it comes to your safety and personal welfare. There usually are many fail-safe security devices and cameras that will eventually catch up with the perpetrator that does not require putting your life on the line
