A man in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina was arrested on Jan. 8 for DUI, in connection to a serious car accident that happened in nearby Mathis Ferry.

The DUI suspect is a 20 year old male, and he has been charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury.

The police stated that the man was driving his Jeep SUV on Highway 17 when he ran through a red light. His Jeep slammed into a Mercedes that was going left at the intersection. The Mercedes driver and passenger were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Our View

Anyone who has suffered injuries due to the careless actions of a suspected drunk driver has legal rights that they should carefully consider with a qualified attorney. Whether the alleged drunk driver is convicted or not, the injured party can still file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver.

If the injured person prevails in civil court, they can get compensation for their medical costs, lost wages and pain and suffering. Some people injured from drunk drivers have devastating injuries and are not able to work for months, and some may not be able to work again. The injured party also has the option of demanding punitive damages, which are intended to punish the driver for their careless actions.

Our Virginia and North Carolina DUI attorneys wish that no driver would choose to drive drunk, but as long as these DUI crashes happen, we stand ready to sue the reckless driver to help their victims.
