A multi-vehicle accident in Virginia Beach on I-264 killed two and injured five last night.

The major car accident blocked both eastbound and westbound lanes on I-264 at First Colonial Road in Virginia Beach for several hours. The police reported that two died and five were hurt.

A Chrysler Pacific was going west on I-264 when it went over the median and hit two vehicles going eastbound. The Chrysler hit a Lexus, and that crash caused the Chrysler to flip over and hit a Honda van.

The Chrysler driver, 44 year old Sherita Morgan, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The passenger in the Chrysler died at the accident scene. The Lexus driver, 63 year old Stephen W. Austin, also died at the accident scene. His wife and children in the vehicle were taken to the hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

Charges are pending.

Our View

Our Virginia Beach car accident personal injury attorneys send our condolences to the families of the injured and deceased in this tragic Virginia car accident. We are very experienced personal injury attorneys and we see many devastating car accidents that are caused by distracted driving for one reason or another. Given the fact that the Chrysler driver crossed the median of I-264, she either was distracted or fell asleep. A medical emergency also is a possibility.

The statistics on distracted driving are shocking: 3154 people in 2013 were killed due to distracted driving. One of the most common causes of distracted driving today is talking and texting on cell phones. Texting on a cell phone while driving can be just as dangerous as drinking and driving; a Virginia Tech distracted driving study found that truck drvers are 20 times more likely to crash when they text behind the wheel.

There is nothing to be done to bring back the deceased in this Virginia Beach car accident. But there is a devastated family left behind with serious injuries. Those injuries could take months or even years to recover from, and they also will be suffering from the loss of their father. A wrongful death lawsuit coupled with a personal injury lawsuit could be appropriate here so that the family receives compensation both for their injuries and for the devastating loss of their loved one.
