The North Carolina State Police reported that Abraham T. Morris, from Salisbury, was driving under the influence of alcohol at more than 100 MPH when he crossed the center line of the highway and slammed into another car head on.
The driver of the car that was hit head-on , Kendra Whitaker, was pinned in her vehicle for an hour. The drunk driver then struck another vehicle, where two more people suffered minor injuries.
Morris has a previous DWI on his record. He has been charged in this crash with DWI, driving with a revoked license, and crossing the center line.
The CDC reports that there were 4102 people killed in drunk driving crashes in this state from 2003 until 2012. As a whole, the number of drunk drivers in North Carolina who die in accidents is higher than the US overall. The rate of death per 100,000 population in the state is 4.2, while in the US it is 3.3.
Our Virginia and North Carolina drunk driving and wrongful death attorneys want to remind drivers that driving under the influence is very dangerous. A person with a BAC of .10 or more is seven times more likely to get in a deadly car accident than a person who is sober. If your BAC is above .15, the chances of a crash are 25 times greater.
Also keep in mind that just because you are below the legal limit of .08 for most states, you still can get in a crash and be held liable for driving under the influence. A 160-pound man who drinks two beers in an hour should have a BAC of about .04, which is under the legal limit for North Carolina. But he would still be 1.4 times more likely to have an accident. If the police officer determines that your drinking led to the accident, you still can be charged for DWI even if you are below .08.
