Thousands of tourists will soon be flocking to the Outer Banks, NC and will be looking for watersports to enjoy. Parasailing is a widely popular sport and there are many great companies from Nags Head to Kitty Hawk who provide an exciting ride for the adventurous person. For a fee of $65 to $145, one or two people can take a ride from 500 to 800 feet above the water. This activity allows a person to be attached to a parachute which has a tow rope that is connected to a boat. Most rides go without a hitch and the tourists has an exciting story to tell when they return home. This is not the case in a Florida parasailing accident.
In 2007 two sisters were enjoying a tandem parasail in Pompano Beach, Florida when tragedy struck. According to MSNBC.com, the teens went parasailing around 1pm and about a half hour before the ascent the National Weather Service issued a marine advisory warning about thunderstorms coming into the area. During their parasail event the wind speed went from 15 mph to about 40 mph which caused the boat to run ashore leaving 15 year-old Amber White and 17 year-old Crystal White suspended in air over the beach for about 2 minutes. The parachute then began to spin out of control causing the line to break which sent the two teens onto the roof of the Beachcomber Hotel and through trees in the courtyard. As a result of the accident, Amber had broken her neck and died two days later and Crystal suffered major trauma to her head. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Captain Scott Kip and Pompano Beach Watersports.
