According to the USA Today Magistrate Judge Phillip Frazier has found that a doctor at a southern Illinois military base misdiagnosed Jean Phillips, an ex-wife of a Scott Airforce Base Captain. Phillips sought treatment for a rash in 2002 and the doctor assumed she was an addict looking for prescription drugs. Her rash turned out to be a flesh eating bacteria which resulted in the loss of use of an arm.
The government requested the award of $8.5 million be trimmed by $1 million. The judge cut the compensation award by less than $63,000.
According to the Public Citizen website concerning North Carolina’s medical malpractice, states data from the Institute of Medicine that preventable medical errors cause 1,259 to 2,803 deaths in North Carolina each year. “These errors cost residents, families and communities $486 million to $830 million annually in lost wages, lost productivity and increased health care costs. In contrast, medical malpractice insurance costs North Carolina’s doctors $159 million annually.”
