Woman Dies of Head Trauma from Golf Cart Accident at Carteret County Campground

Comments Off

A woman camping at a Carteret County campground has died from head trauma after falling from a golf cart. Authorities familiar with the accident said that she died on Sunday after receiving the head injury earlier in the weekend. It is still unclear as to what exactly happened.

According to the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office, Carteret County emergency responders were sent to White Oak Shores in Stella, North Carolina (N.C.) after getting a call that a woman had fallen off a golf cart. The paramedics found the woman alive at the campground and transported her to Carteret General Hospital. The woman was then airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where she died Sunday.

The EMS report stated that the woman had fallen from the golf cart and received a head injury. The report also said that alcohol was involved, but didn’t disclose whether or not someone else was driving the golf cart. The Deputies say that it’s been ruled an accidental death.

Head trauma accidents such as this are very tragic and often when it comes down to surviving one is not just its severity, but the initial care you receive immediately following the accident. Emergency treatment within the so-called "golden hour" following the injury is crucial.

Head trauma victims with moderate to severe injuries are likely to receive treatment in an intensive care unit followed by a neurosurgical ward. Treatment depends on the recovery stage of the patient. In the acute stage the primary aim of the medical personnel is to stabilize the patient and focus on preventing further injury because little can be done to reverse the initial damage caused by trauma.
