Comments Off

bicycle safetyTwo deadly bicycle accidents in Wake County, N.C. have left two different families struggling with the loss of their loved ones.

On Friday morning, a 36-year-old man was struck by a vehicle as he was riding his bike on N.C. Highway 751 in Apex. The victim died instantly after being hit by the car. The driver of the vehicle immediately called 911 to report the fatal crash. The victim, who lived in Cary, was the father of three young children. Police are investigating the accident and have released no other details.

The tragic accident comes just days after another horrific bike accident involving a hit and run driver in Cary. Four cyclists were riding on High House Road when two of them were hit by a man driving an SUV. The driver sped off from the scene and witnesses said he still had one of the bicycles stuck in his windshield.

One of the victims, a 48-year-old Raleigh woman, remains on life support and officials say she is not expected to survive. The other victim, a 55-year-old woman from Cary, sustained severe injury to her leg and is listed in serious condition.

The 33-year-old driver of the SUV was apprehended by police a short time later after being alerted by a 911 caller that the vehicle, with the bike still in the windshield, showed up in his neighborhood, and a man jumped from the car, pulled the bike and threw it on the ground and then took off.

The driver has been charged with two counts of felony hit and run. Court records reveal that the Morrisville man has been arrested 18 times. He is currently being held on $100,000 bond.

Bike Crash Injuries

One of the most common injuries for victims of bike accidents is a brain injury. The extent of the injury includes concussions, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and brain damage. TBIs can be devastating, life-long injuries causing conditions such as memory loss, headaches, mood swings, and frustration.

Victims of bicycle accidents are also at high risk for injuries to the spinal cord. The impact of the crash can cause the victim to land on their head, neck, or back and this force can cause fractures to the vertebrae, as well as paralysis.

Fractures, broken bones, and facial injuries are also common injuries suffered by bike accident victims. It is not uncommon for cyclists hit by vehicles to suffer from multiple broken bones.

And tragically, far too often, victims of bicycle accidents suffer injuries so severe they are unable to survive, leaving grieving families behind. Not only do families suffer the loss of their loved one, there is often astronomical medical bills, as well as funeral and burial expenses, that need to be covered. Families of fatal bike accident victims should contact an experienced North Carolina wrongful death attorney to find out what legal recourse they may have.
