South Carolina Troopers Charge Big Rig Driver in Fatal Hit and Run

Comments Off

South Carolina state troopers have charged a tractor trailer driver in Chester County SC in an accident that led to the death of a North Carolina woman on Feb. 7.

The truck driver has been identified as Stevie Wolfe Breland, 67, from Charleston SC.

The SC state police stated that the big rig driver hit the woman’s SUV on I-77. She was identified as Flora M. Ellenburg from Salisbury NC. She was ejected from the vehicle when Breland hit her with his truck.

Breland left the scene after the accident, and the police issued a warrant for his arrest. He currently is at the Charleston County Detention Center on charges unrelated to the hit and run accident.

Our South Carolina trucking accident attorneys see way too many preventable crashes such as this truck accident. If truck drivers would simply obey the rules of the road as laid out in each state’s Commercial Driver’s License Manual, everything would be fine.

The South Carolina CDL emphasizes the importance of being a safe truck driver. It stresses that the major cause of all accidents is simply not looking properly at the road ahead. Many truck drivers are looking at the road, but they fail to look far enough down the road.

A vehicle going 55 MPH is travelling at 60 feet per second. To stop a fully loaded big rig from that speed, it will take at least 250 feet. If the truck driver is not watching well up the road, he may not be able to stop in time if traffic is stopped or slowed.

The CDL for South Carolina also points out that speeding is the other major cause of accidents. There is no reason to risk the lives of innocent people to keep to your delivery schedule.

When truck drivers do not obey the rules of the road, tragedy can result. Our truck accident law firm has been involved in many civil lawsuits involving truck drivers whose inattention and carelessness killed. At least in many cases, we are able to reach substantial confidential settlements for the grieving family of a deadly truck accident.
