A grisly truck accident killed three children – all under the age of 10 – and an adult. The horrific crash occurred at approximately 4 a.m. on Interstate 95 in Yemassee, South Carolina.

According to officials with the Colleton County Fire and Rescue, an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer crushed and then drove on top of a 2001 Ford Taurus. The four victims who were killed were all sitting in the back seat of the Taurus. Emergency responders had to cut the female driver out of the car. She was airlifted to Trident Medical Center. Officials say she is suffering from severe injuries and is in critical condition. The woman’s husband, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was also taken to the Trident Medical Center, however, there is no word on the extent of his injuries or medical condition.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Rescue workers were on the scene of the deadly truck crash for over five hours, backing up traffic for 10 miles.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal crash and a spokesperson said it could be weeks before investigators determine the cause of the crash. One of the most common causes for  tractor-trailer crashes is speeding. National statistics show that almost 25 percent of all truck crashes involve a truck driving over the posted speed limit. Speeding trucks are more difficult to maneuver and the faster a truck is traveling, the longer it takes to slow it down or bring it to a stop.
