Don’t Let Foodborne Illness-Causing Organisms Stop Your Outer Banks Vacation Dead in Its Tracks

Comments Off

The Outer Banks is filled with great restaurants and fresh seafood comes in daily from the boats at Oregon Inlet as well as from the Wanchese fishing industry. That’s about as fresh as it gets. A big part of a great vacation is eating out at all the fine dining restaurants through out Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, and even over in Manteo. So, the last thing you want to contend with is food borne illness-causing organisms that might be lurking on your plate.

While most all of the above mentioned restaurant locations have the cleanest and most hygiene facilities, you would be surprised just how easily these microscopic contaminates can take hold. While the American food supply is among the safest in the world, the Federal government estimates that there are more than 76 million cases of food borne illness annually, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths – meaning that roughly 13 men, women and children die every day because of food borne illness.

Food borne disease-causing organisms frequently cause illness in the United States. The threats are numerous and varied, with symptoms ranging from relatively mild discomfort to very serious, life-threatening illness. While the very young, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk of serious consequences from most food borne illnesses, some of these organisms pose grave threats to all persons.

If you find yourself or a loved one suffering even minor symptoms a few hours after eating somewhere, even at your own house, pay close attention to your symptom and possibly seek medical care if the condition does not improve. Of course, we never want anyone to fall prey to foodborne illness, but if you do we want to make sure you are safe and back to your best health as soon as possible.
