A passenger in a Disabled American Veterans Van died on NC 43 near Falkland. The passenger was killed after a car made an illegal pass that triggered a four-vehicle crash.
The van was from the Twin Counties 55 DAV Chapter in Rocky Mount, North Carolina (NC). It was going north on the highway near Short Bridge Road when it slammed into an SUV, the state police reported.
The van flipped in a ditch killing the passenger. The driver of the van was taken to a nearby hospital. The names of the driver and passenger were not released. No other injuries were reported.
Witnesses said that a black vehicle fled the scene after the accident. It was in a no-passing zone, which triggered the wreck.
The Rocky Mount Telegram reported that a Ford Expedition going south attempted to stop for the black vehicle, and another vehicle hit the Ford from the rear. The Ford then spun into the northbound lane, slamming into the DAV, which caused it to flip into the ditch. The Ford also hit a Honda car that was going behind the van.
The driver of the Honda attends a nearby community college, and said that he saw a gray or black car in front of him trying to pass illegally. He said he thought it was a Toyota four door but he could not tell for sure.
The Honda driver added that he got out of his car to help the people in the totaled van. The two people inside were yelling for help.
This is an awful accident and our hearts go out to the victims. This tragic wreck illustrates the serious risks that are inherent when attempting to make an illegal lane change or pass another vehicle recklessly. Caution and due care are much wiser courses of action than throwing caution to the wind and attempting to make an illegal pass on a road or highway.
