A man was seriously injured in a motorcycle wreck in Wilmington, North Carolina (NC).

The man, David Tollefson, was traveling on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington when a car pulled out in front of his motorcycle. Tollefson swerved to avoid hitting the car, loosing control of his motorcycle. He then crashed in to the back of the car.

David Tollefson was sent to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he is being treated for severe injuries. The driver of the car was not hurt in the accident.

Motorcycle accidents can be far more serious then car accidents. Motorcyclists are more exposed to the vehicle and more susceptible to damage or even death. In 2006, close to 5,000 people were killed in motorcycle accidents. The most common cause of these accidents was motorcycles crashing with other vehicles such as small cars or SUVS.

According to Motorcyclesafetyinfo.com the most common cause of motorcycle accidents is the driver of the vehicle simply not seeing the motorcycle on the roadway. It is also very common for motorcycles to get into accidents in intersections, or while entering highways.

Motorcycles are smaller then vehicles and their one headlight can be hard to spot at nighttime. Even if you don’t ride a motorcycle you can do your part to cut down on these types of accidents. Always give motorcycles the right of way, especially at intersections, and make note of where they are on the roadway at all times. Motorcycles can easily fall in to your blind spot and you can turn in front of them before you realize they are there. By sharing the roadway with motorcycles you can greatly reduce your risk of an accident.
