Comments Off

9 year-old, William Barber Jr who was riding on the back of a motorcycle with his father, William Barber Sr was involved in a motorcycle/car accident last weekend. In Burlington, North Carolina 41 year-old Lidia Lopez ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle and the Barber’s motorcycle. William Barber Sr and the driver of the other vehicle both died. William Barber Jr was life-flighted to Duke University Medical Center and is listed in fair condition. Lopez was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving without an operator’s license and running a red light.

This accident prompted the reported question by WFMY News regarding the laws and children riding on motorcycles. According to the report North Carolina has no laws pertaining to the age of motorcycle passengers. The laws that are in place for motorcycles rule that a state approved helmet must be worn and no more passengers may ride in excess as to the vehicle was designed to carry.
