Search Suspended for Woman Missing in Currituck Sound

Comments Off

Coast Guard crews and other responders have suspended the search for a woman missing after swimming from a boat in Currituck Sound along the Outer Banks. As reported by the Virginia Pilot, the Coast Guard said Sunday it had called off the search for 26-year-old Leah Kathleen Bland of Greenville. The woman was swimming from an 18-foot boat with another woman Saturday night near Poplar Branch.

Search crews scoured the area through Sunday afternoon until the efforts were suspended. It became apparent they were not going to find the missing woman, with suspicion that she may have drowned. Petty Officer Jason Frivance of the Coast Guard said the women didn’t anchor the boat, which drifted away in a northeast wind. The woman who survived said she swam for an hour to catch the boat and didn’t see her friend when she looked back.

Boating is a great recreational pastime that is an excellent way to relax and enjoy nature’s bounty on the water. However, there are certain safety precautions that always have to be accounted for regardless of the specific situation you may find yourself in while on the boat. Accidents usually happen when we are not following standard protocal and most likely occur when our guard is down. The next time you go boating on your favorite water craft make sure you are safe by following all the guidelines required by law at the very least.
