NC House Approves Plastic Bag Ban For Retailers for a More Environmentally Friendly Outer Banks

Comments Off

In an attempt to secure a cleaner and more environmentally friendly beach members of the North Carolina legislative branch are getting very close to ordering big retailers on the Outer Banks to quit using lightweight plastic bags.

The House voted 78-41 on Thursday to require stores to use paper bags or have their customers bring in reusable bags. The bag ban would only affect the largest of stores on the tourist filled islands of Dare, Currituck and Hyde counties.

Tim Spear, NC representative from Washington County said keeping our beaches clean is necessary to keep the estimated 7 million visitors and their dollars coming to the Outer Banks. It should be noted that the bill was brought to the houses attention originally by Senate leader Marc Basnight of Dare County
