Survivors of Deadly Bus Crash Sue Church

Twelve football players and several coaches who survived a bus crash in North Carolina are suing the church that operated the bus.

The lawsuit filed last week stated that Sandy River Baptist Church in Chester County NC did not maintain the bus and its tires properly and also did not inspect the vehicle.

The bus was traveling at 65 MPH on Sept. 17 when its left front tire blew on US 74 near Hamlet NC. The driver lost control of the bus, and it smashed into a guardrail and bridge support.

Four people died, including the bus driver, and 42 people were hurt.

Our View

We are personal injury and wrongful death attorneys in North Carolina and Virginia, and it saddens us that this tragedy happened, because it could have been avoided.

It is the responsibility of the commercial bus or truck owner to conduct regular safety inspections to make sure the vehicle is safe for the road. It is likely that this bus had worn and/or underinflated tires that led to the deadly blow out.

Unfortunately, it is all too common for commercial bus and truck companies to neglect safety concerns on their rigs and just keep driving.

Our personal injury law firm has worked on truck crash cases where a tread separation led to a serious accident with personal injuries. That case resulted in a $650,000 verdict for our client, but in the above case, the judgment could be into the millions of dollars, given the fact that four people died.
