A recent study by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute showed that up to 25,000 crashes annually could be prevented and 800 lives saved, if all heavy trucks and buses had on board video monitoring and safety compliance technology.
The study was done by the Center for Truck and Bus Safety at Virginia Tech, and was commissioned by Lytx, Inc., based in San Diego.
The university looked at crash data from 2010-12, and found that using in vehicle video to watch driving behavior could prevent up to 35% of all crashes that involve buses and trucks. This would save 801 lives, and more than 39,000 injuries.
The study researchers found that if driver behavior is the main reason for traffic wrecks, approaches that pinpoint and reduce dangerous driving behavior could be the best at reducing the number of crashes.
The authors of the study also noted that motor vehicle crashes are predictable and preventable. Yet, many drivers still choose to behave in such ways that put them at higher risk for a crash. The best, modern onboard safety monitoring systems utilize in vehicle video to collect information on driving behaviors that may be easily corrected.
The company that commissioned the study specializes in the use of video technology, predictive analytics and cloud technology to reduce the number of crashes involving trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles.
