Rowan County Woman Airlifted after Wreck

Comments Off

A serious car crash critically injured a Rowan County woman as she was flown to an area hospital after her car overturned. Authorities familiar with the wreck said she was ejected from her vehicle at the crash site in the western end of the county. As the crash is still under investigation and the victim’s family have not yet been notified so the woman’s identity has not yet been released by the N.C. Highway Patrol.

According to Trooper D.A. Motsinger, the woman was traveling west on Needmore Road in a white 1998 Grand Am around 2:45 p.m. on Friday when she ran off the road to the right. The crash victim struck a ditch at a driveway at 2105 Needmore Road. The vehicle flipped and overturned approximately three times, coming to rest on its hood on the westbound shoulder.

The woman was driving alone and was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Officials reported that her injuries were severe enough to be airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina (N.C.) As the wreck is still under investigation it is not clear as to whether or not she was wearing a seatbelt.

Statistics show that seat belts save lives. For a passenger who is traveling in the backseat at the time of their car accident, wearing a seat belt is 44% more effective at preventing death than riding unrestrained. For those riding in the rear of vans and sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) during a car crash, rear seat belts are 73% better at preventing fatalities. Keep in mind that victims are not properly restrained in more than one-half of all fatal car accidents.
