North Carolina Woman Charged in Fatal Thanksgiving DWI

A woman from Raeford, North Carolina is facing charges after she hit and killed a pedestrian early on Thanksgiving day.

The local police stated that a 20 year old male was crossing the street when he was hit by the woman, who allegedly was drunk. She fled the scene of the crash.

The police added that his family found the man’s body in a ditch two hours after the fatal, North Carolina DWI crash. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The woman has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving left of center, having an expired registration and leaving the scene of an accident. She is being held on a $200,000 bond. The woman also filed a false police after the crash.

Our View

Our North Carolina personal injury attorneys have seen far too many innocent people’s lives taken due to DWI in this state. It is particularly tragic that this latest DWI crash happened on such a beloved family holiday.

In 2012, 402 people died in DWI crashes in the state. Around the country, 10,000 people died in drunk driving accidents. That accounted for 31% of all fatal crashes that year.

Our drunk driving attorneys would like to remind all drivers that it is very important to be sober when getting behind the wheel. It is more common on weekends and at major holidays for these drunk driving crashes to happen. It is very easy to get a ride these days when you have been drinking. Whether you use Uber, Lfyt or a taxi, it is simple and inexpensive to get where you need to go without endangering lives.

Our North Carolina and Virginia attorneys once represented a client in Norfolk who was seriously injured by a drunk driver. The drunk driver actually plowed him over while he was walking on a sidewalk after leaving the gym. While he, fortunately, was not killed, he did suffer serious leg injuries. He had to have four different surgeries on his leg that caused him to miss several weeks of work.

Our attorneys were able to secure a $100,000 drunk driving settlement in this case. There was a possibility of suing the driver for punitive damages, but it would not have netted him any more compensation.

In the above case, a wrongful death lawsuit could be filed that could net the family a large settlement or verdict. While this will never compensate the family for their loss, a potential settlement could help them to overcome the financial loss of such a devastating accident.
