Jacksonville Prosecutors Injured in Weekend Crash in Georgia

Comments Off

Last week, two Jacksonville prosecutors had been injured along a stretch of I-95 in Georgia in a car wreck near Brunswick, and one remains in the hospital. The victims involved were Assistant State Attorneys Adam Urra, 29, and Brittany Mauerberger, 25. The two were traveling north on the interstate around 8am when Urra lost control in a curve and then overcorrected, according to Georgia State Patrol. The Mitsubishi Eclipse veered off the road and overturned on them.

It has been reported that Mauerberger wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. Urra had been wearing a belt and remained inside the vehicle as it overturned. An eyewitness to the car crash, Steve Stitt, was headed to South Carolina from Jacksonville when he saw the Eclipse in front of him catch the edge of the highway and fishtail. Stitt then saw the car flip and then land on its hood.

The eye witness saw Urra crawl out from under the car and at that point Stitt was looking for Mauereberger. They soon found her face down in some leaves and grass a few yards away from the crash site. They were both taken to the Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick hospital. According to the accident report, Mauerberger had suffered critical injuries. State Attorney Angela Corey said Urra returned to work Monday. Mauerberger, who handles county court cases, was still in the hospital last reported.

A leading type of serious, if not fatal crash, is what a police crash report defines as "overcorrection". Overcorrection is simply over steering in reaction to an event, and the loss of control, the reaction of the vehicle. This forces a driver in the left lane onto the shoulder, the driver over reacts, and over steers, trying to get back on the pavement.
