Beaufort County Man Survives After Running Car Into Canal

Comments Off

Beaufort County authorities say 82 year old, Clarence Beacham, crossed the center line and ran into a canal. The North Carolina Highway Patrol says Beacham was on Turkey Trot Number Two (road) in Beaufort County Thursday morning.

Those near to the victim say he was rescued from the water by his close friend, Billy Braddy, before first responder crews were able to arrive. This long-time family friend of the elderly man who crashed into a Beaufort County canal is being credited with rescuing him. Beachum had been visiting Braddy before the accident and knew something wasn’t right and followed his friend home.

Troopers say Beachum’s car came to rest in the canal off Turkey Trot Number Two. Braddy described the rescue, saying, "I told him to put his hands around my neck and he actually stuck his fingernails in my neck and that’s fine and great, but that’s the way he held on. I was afraid that if he held onto my waist that he would slip down. Beachum’s family believes he blacked out due to complications with a new heart medicine. Beachum is recovering at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina (NC).

A family member of Beachum called WITN newsroom, telling us Clarence has a pre-existing heart condition and blacked out behind the wheel before running into the 5 or 6 feet deep canal; his family says a close friend followed Clarence after he left a store saying he didn’t feel well. That friend got into the water and convinced Beacham to get out of the submerged car. Beacham managed to get out of the car and was taken to the hospital where his family says he’s in stable condition.
